Job Description

The role is to provide technical support within the technical capability of Effluent, HALES and Environmental Chemistry in the provision of nuclear decommissioning and environmental clean-up services with an emphasis on nuclear abatement processes.

The available role is predominantly radioactive lab-based working with other team members and is based at the Central Laboratory Facility.

Main responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Effluents, HALES & Environmental Chemistry – Ops and Technical Support:

  • Technical support in the fields of effluent and environmental chemistry.
  • Development of experimental work programmes and conduct a range of active and non-active experimental work including troubleshooting.
  • Support to experimental work programmes including sampling, sample preparation and physical and chemical analysis.
  • Interpretation and presentation of results including authoring Technical Memoranda and Reports.
  • Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.
  • Keep abreast of developments in their own field and apply them to projects.
  • Training and development of self and other team members.
  • Support team to meet objectives.
  • Ensure all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied.
  • Fulfilment of key operational and EHSS&Q roles such as lab task supervisor, team lab area owner and team lab waste coordinator.

Ideal candidate

Essential Criteria for Effluents, HALES & Environmental Chemistry – Ops and Technical Support:

  • Experience working within area 500 at central laboratory.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to form effective working relationships at all levels.
  • Flexibility in dealing with changing workloads.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment including the planning and completion of complex experiments, and interpretation of the associated result.
  • Demonstrable pro-active approach to identifying and implementing improvements in ways of working.
  • Excellent track record in upholding high standards in quality and safety.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Effluents, HALES & Environmental Chemistry – Ops and Technical Support:

  • Familiarity with a range of analytical techniques e.g. SEM, ICP / OES-MS, alpha spectrometry, gamma spectrometry, LSC.
  • Appointed Task Supervisor.
  • PAT and/or PUWER assessor.
  • Experience in carrying out a variety of laboratory work, including both batch and column experiments.
  • Knowledge of radioactive waste disposal.
  • Familiarity with SL effluent treatment plants.
