Job Description for Senior Project Manager:

NNL is where your project management helps deliver our purpose. As part of our Project Management Authority, you’ll play a critical role in managing projects that deliver nuclear science to benefit society. Your project management skills and attention to detail will enable industry-leading scientists, engineers and analysts to work together to deliver unique projects using cutting edge technology. It’s a challenging role but it’s an opportunity to grow, adapt and develop new skills in a fast-moving area.

This is a Senior Project Manager position incorporating a Customer Workstream Lead role, responsible for the safe delivery of a significant portfolio of projects for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority customer. As such the individual is expected to have an excellent track record of delivering complex Research and Development based projects together with Infrastructure projects.

The Senior Project Manager will provide leadership and management support for all ongoing portfolio activities, including escalation activities and performance reporting, managing the overall customer relationship in support of a positive customer experience. They will ensure the safe and timely delivery of projects to agreed cost and quality standards.

As a Senior Project Manager, the individual will have line management responsibilities for a 8-10 member team of project managers / assistant project managers and therefore will need to demonstrate experience of team management. There is an expectation that the candidate will have sufficient experience and delivery track record to provide coaching and mentoring of team members.

The position and team are based at NNL’s Central Laboratory. The individual will be expected to travel to other NNL and customer sites as required, along with periodic oversight of work being done by members of the team

Main Responsibilities for Senior Project Manager:

The candidate would be sufficiently skilled and experienced to manage work without supervision – typically managing complex, high value projects in a nuclear environment. They would be expected to have demonstrable substantial knowledge and experience applying the following independently, in complex situations and supervising others in applying the following:

  • Achieve efficient and effective delivery to time, cost and quality.
  • Manage projects of medium to high risk and complexity (i.e. budgets £1M - £10M+; potential >£500k risk on budget; supply chain involved or with capital components to the work).
  • Be fully accountable for project delivery and cost control.
  • Be responsible for the safety aspects of work being carried out.
  • Be responsible for reporting to the customer and the NNL account director.
  • Managing the work within the commercial Terms and Conditions of the contract.
  • Actively carry out risk management and resolution of issues.
  • Empowering and inspiring others to deliver successful projects.
  • Maintaining governance arrangements for the delivery of projects, defining clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities, that align with organisational practice.
  • Managing stakeholders, taking account of their levels of influence and particular interests.
  • Identifying and monitoring portfolio, programme and project risks (threats and opportunities), planning and implementing responses to them and responding to other issues that affect projects.

Essential Criteria for Senior Project Manager:

  • Project Management professional qualification (e.g. APMP, Diploma APM, PMQ IPMA Level D).
  • IOSH Qualification (Managing Safely).
  • Experience in a Project / Programme Management capacity.  
  • Demonstrable experience of successfully leading and delivering medium-large scale / complex projects, in a Senior Project Management capacity.   
  • Demonstrable experience of change management and implementing this process in a complex programme. 
  • Demonstrable experience of Risk Management and implementing relevant industry best practise in a complex programme environment.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of project delivery processes; life cycle management methodologies, and value adding tools, processes and practices.
  • Demonstrable experience of team leadership / mentoring / coaching.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Senior Project Manager:

  • Experience of delivering a range of projects in a nuclear environment, ideally including technical, infrastructure, and capital projects, including installations; commissioning, and management of safety case and / or regulatory requirements. 
  • Experience of delivering projects under different contracting models, e.g. NEC, JCT, etc.
  • Strong understanding of typical project delivery procedures, tools protocols and systems within a nuclear environment or equivalent regulated industry.
  • Experience of Programme and Portfolio Management.
